Verse for the Zen Ritual on the Chongyang Festival, Ninth Day of September  by Wuxue-Zuyuan

Calligraphy by Wuxue Zuyuan, a disciple of Lanxi Daolong. After the death of Lanxi Daolong, he came to Japan in 1279 at the invitation of Hojo Tokimune, and after spending three years at Kenchoji Temple, he became the founder of Engakuji Temple. Engakuji Temple was founded by Hojo Tokimune in 1282 as a memorial for those who lost their lives in the Mongol Invasions. This calligraphy was written on the night of December 8th at the end of 1279, the same year that Wuxue came to Japan, and is a verse that he recited at a regular sermon held on the festival day of September 9th.

Provenance: formerly owned by the tea master Kobori Enshu (1579-1647) and later Masuda family, famous Japanese collectors in modern times.
