Colophon for the Painting Scroll by Yiyuan ji by Feng Zizhen
- Ink on Paper 30.0×118.4cm
- Yuan dynasty, 14th century
This is a colophon written by Yuan dynasty scholar Feng Zizhen at the end of a painting of flowers and insects by Northern Song dynasty painter Yi Yuanji. Although the painting itself has been lost, the colophon praises its beauty. The work is a large, long piece that would not fit in a normal tokonoma alcove. In a letter from Sen no Rikyu accompanying the work (see the figure below,) when asked about cutting the piece to fit in a tokonoma alcove, Rikyu advised against cutting it. That advice has been passed down to the present day.
