  • Ink on paper, 30.4×46.6㎝
  • Nambokucho period, 1336
No.11044

This is a handwritten prayer that Ashikaga Takauji (1305-58, reigned 1338-58) dedicated to Kiyomizu-dera Temple on August 17, 1336 (the third year of the Kenmu era). At the beginning, he describes this world as like a dream, expressing its transience, and then prays that Takauji himself be endowed with a religious spirit and that he may be of help in the afterlife in place of the blessings of this life. He concludes by praying that his younger brother, Ashikaga Tadayoshi, be endowed with peace and tranquility in this life.
