Full Moon and A Pair of Hare by Zosan
- Hanging scroll, colour on paper, 96.1×48 .3㎝
- Muromachi period, 16th century
No.13032
The painting depicts two hares on a earthen slope that cuts the screen diagonally from right to left, gazing at the moon. The hares are painted with chalk powder, with the color tones changing from front to back, and their fur is similarly rendered in fine, painstaking chalk powder. The undergrowth, including the awns, was painted in verdigris, though it has now peeled and turned brown. The earthen slope is painted with light ink, and the large, round moon without outline is to stand out from the screen .
