Oval Cup with Lugs

  • Yue ware, L 10.3cm
  • Eastern Jin Dynasty, 4-5th century
No.21058

Compared to other similar works, this piece is thinner and more carefully made, with diamond-shaped patterns engraved on the top of the lugs and inside. The repair on the edge may indicate that the person who once owned this work took great care of it.
A characteristic of this cup is that when viewed from the side, both ends are curved upwards, giving it a light and sharp impression compared to similar works that are heavy and thick. While oval cups with lugs have been made since the Han Dynasty, and continued to be made in the Three Kingdoms period, the Western and Eastern Jin Dynasties, and the Southern Dynasty, this shape of cup, namely boat-shaped cup with upwardly curved ends appears after the Eastern Jin Dynasty, according to the materials excavated from the datable tombs. Not only this type of ceramic cup, but also lacquer and bronze vessels were unearthed from a tomb of the Eastern Jin Dynasty in Nanchang City, Jiangsu Province.
