White-Slip Celadon Dish
- Yaozhou Ware H 3.5㎝ MD 14.2㎝ BD 6.5㎝
- Five Dynasties -Northern Song Dynasty, 10-11th century
Covered with white slip except for the base. The opaque grayish green celadon glaze covers the entire surface, with three support tool marks left on the base. Both the inside and the base of the dish have been slightly shaved, the interior carved into a curved surface. The area on the base without white slip reveals the brown body with copious iron spotting seen under glaze.
This kind of dish, covered with white slip on the body and glazed overall through the use of support tools left three marks on the base, has been excavated from the Huangpu kiln site that the Institute of Archeology, Shaanxi Province and Yaozhou Museum considered to be the Five Dynasties Yaozhou kiln.
Judging from the archaeological reports of kiln sites at Huangpu both of Five Dynasties and Song dynasty, the overall glazed dishes with support tool usage are not found at the “Northern Song Yaozhou kiln site” as differentiated by the Institute and the Museum form the “Five Dynasties Huangpu kilsn site.” This inventive support tool usage for overall glazing is next found in materials excavated from the Qingliangsi kiln site, Baofeng in Henan province and then linked to the Southern Song imperial wares in South.
