White-Slipped Celadon Bowl with Five Foliate Rim
- H 5.2cm MD 15.0cm BD 4.3cm
- Five Dynasties -Northern Song Dynasty, 10-11th century
This bowl shape, with five-petal foliate rim, largely flaring from a small foot through a five-lobed body, is reminiscent of morning glory. The white slip does not extend to the foot, but the overall glazing covers both base and the inside of the foot, with sand traces in three spots on the base of the foot. The glaze is opaque and whitish in tone.
While white slipped celadon bowls are majority of excavated items from the Huangpu kiln, which has been designated a Five Dynasties Yaozhou kiln by the Institute of Archaeology, Shaanxi Province and the Yaozhou Museum, similar example to this bowl has not been reported. It may possibly be suggested that there were kilns firing opaque whitish celadon somewhere in northern China around the same time as the Huangpu kiln.
