Religious Verse, Given to a Japanese Disciple Haku’un Egyo  by Duanqi Miaoyong

  • Ink on Paper 31.2cm×86.1cm
  • Southern Song dynasty, dated 1269
No.11006

Duanqi Miaoyong was a disciple of Wuzhun Shifan (1177-1249), and although the details of his biography are unknown, the date 1269 on this scroll gives us the approximate period during which he was active. Haku’un Egyo (1223-97) was the successor of En’ni (1202-80), the founder of Tofukuji Temple in Japan and a disciple of Wuzhun like Duanqi. En’ni and Duanqi had close ties across borders, and Duanqi wrote this verse when Haku’un visited him in Southern Song China.
