A model calligraphy for the tablet “Xuntang” used in Zen ritual by Wuzhun-Shifan
- Ink on paper 71.7cm×36.5cm
- Southern Song dynasty, 13th century
“巡堂 Xuntang” refers to the tour of the monks’ halls at a Zen temple ritual, and this work is created as a model for the tablet that would be displayed to announce this event. This work was sent by Wuzhun to En’ni, the founder of Tofuku-ji Temple. Many Zen monks traveled from Japan to the Southern Song Dynasty China and became disciples of Wuzhun Shifan and En’ni was one of them. The red seals “Fumon-in,” En’ni’s residence at Tofuku-ji Temple, stamped to the right of this calligraphy indicate that this work was a treasured item of the temple.
